The Cold War is the shifting struggle for power and prestige between the Western
powers and the Communist bloc from the end of World War II until 1989. The Cold War
was a fight between democracy and communism.
There had always been mutual suspicion between the West and the USSR. This
suspicion could be seen in the alliances these two powers had made during World War II.

original problem the US had with the Soviet Union and the
USSR had with the United States was that we had two different kinds of government.
This problem with government had many battles like the Cuban Missile crisis and the
Berlin Airlift, but all it turned out to be was one big war for democracy. The US fought
in the Korean and Vietnam war. Thousands died because we were in a race to save
democracy.
