Media representation reflects the cultural values and attitudes of Australian society with to a huge degree but not completely.
Australia's sporting attitude has a big impact in the way women's sport is represented as it focuses on men's sport. Australians have interest in more men's sport because they display more skill and are more exciting to watch. For that reason women's sport is a lot of the time, ignored by the media

Also, many women athletes have other responsibilities, which may be included as social expectations, such as looking after the family, doing household chores for example cooking, cleaning or helping the family for young teenage girls. As a result female athletes retire earlier than males. None of these social expectations exist for the male athletes. In conclusion, basically social expectations push female athletes into becoming the sex-role stereotypical woman, sometimes forcing them into quitting their sport.
