To be African American living in Deep South of America was to have no hope at all. To be African American and living in New England was to have very little hope. The number of opportunities for African American's differed greatly between the previous slave owning Southern states and the industrial states of the North East. Yes, things in the north eastern states were improving slightly faster than in the southern states where oppression and groups such as the KKK with there close minded views were commonplace. Which explain the large migration of African Americans from where there was no hope, the Deep South, to where there was an inkling of hope, in the north.
