…showed last 75 words of 763 total…for a pretty long time. They had religion, customs, some of which were superstitious, weird, and sometimes even a little frigherning, and government. When the white men tried to "save" them, they basically destroyed their civilization. In my opinion, what the white men were doing wouldn't necessarily have been bad if they had gone about it in a different way. The villagers were better off before the presence of the white man ruled their life.
