done its work. At the end of the story, Pearl has grown older, and has completely skipped her childhood, doing the work of the letter instead. Though Pearl can never turn back time and have a normal childhood, Pearl would not be who she is, and the scarlet letter would still curse its owner, instead of it being a virtue.
