It is imperative that as historians, one understands that the old imperial system was based on mercantilism, and in order to implement this policy, the British passed the navigation acts. The basic role of the colonies, under the mercantilist policy, was to support Britain. Consequently the American colonials experienced its advantages and disadvantages.
