A slave is a person who is bound in servitude as the property of a person or household. There were many times in history when slaves thought they were going to be freed from slavery but then whites stuck together and made sure that they would be superior over them. So the African Americans had to work hard just to obtain their identities and hold on to their beliefs during the rough years of slavery.
