Cuban Missile Crisis is based on major conflict between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), which was over Soviet-supplied missile installations in Cuba. It was regarded as the world's closest approach to nuclear war. In 1960 Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev began plans to supply Cuba with medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. a major Cold War confrontation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Following the Bay Of Pigs Invasion, the USSR secretly began building missile-launching sites in Cuba. After the construction was detected by U.S. reconnaissance flights, U.S. President Kennedy demanded the withdrawal of the missiles, and forced a naval blockade on Cuba. The Soviets agreed ON Oct. 28 to dismantle the missile sites, and the crisis ended as fast as it had begun.
