system was desegregated in the case of Brown v. the Board of Education, black athletes started to become accepted into major sports such as Jackie Robinson, and Martin Luther King Jr. was emerging as a spokesman for African Americans. There was resistance to these happenings for example in the town of Little Rock. The Klu Klux Klan was also at its biggest during the fifties but civil rights were gaining importance as a political issue.
