The practice of slavery goes back to ancient time, but as it developed in the
United States, the slave system was different. It was different in at least two
ways which were the slaves in the United States had no legal rights and the
slaves were racially distinct.
By the 1800, slavery had increased greatly in the United States and was a
main issue. It split the United States into two sides, one against slavery and

recovery of fugitive slaves. The law was a disaster for slaves attempting to build
lives in the North. It made abolitionists all the more resolved to put an end to
slavery and the underground railroad became more effective. The
accomplishment this Compromise had was it kept the nation united, but it was
only temporary because over the following decade the country became further
divided over the issue of slavery.
