The Southern States quickly realized that crops such as tobacco and cotton were very much in demand. The land and climate were excellent for the growth of these crops and slave labor was perfectly suited for the jobs. Most importantly to the growers, slave labor was very cheap. The planters invested in slaves rather than machinery to increase production.

by a Black man. We learn later in the movie that the Sheriff knew all along that his wife was lying, but he still consented to the ruin and pillage of the Black population in town. This kind of racism, while rare, does still occur in some places in the country today, most notably in the rural South. Slavery no longer exists, but Blacks today still experience hints of the vast mistreatment from racist whites.
