Lennie cannot forge a future because he cannot get out of the shadow of the past. The one way in which he could move on is if he stops killing things accidentally. Because of his mental problems and past experiences, however, he continues on without changing and this brings his downfall. He cannot determine his own fate; his past determines his fate.
