At the beginning of the Middle Ages, most trade was in expensive goods, but soon there was trade in all items, even like food. There was trade between countries for things like spices as well as local trade. Towns grew around the local markets.

In summary, the growth of towns in the middle ages had a big affect on them. It expanded the empires and opened it for other countries to come in and out with other good that they didn’t have, which expanded it. So in a sense trade was the biggest reason why the growth of towns effected life in the Middle Ages.
