He is a difficult person to understand because at the party in the Lord Capulet's household he knows that Romeo could be killed if he caught in there but he is somewhat irresponsible but takes the risk anyway. Later on he is then really protective of Romeo and fights against Tybalt. This is the last part of the play with Mercutio in and after this everything that is to come in the play involves disaster.
