The League of Nations
1919-1939
On several occasions during the period between 1919 and 1936, the League of
Nations failed to deliver international peace between nations. This is one of the
factors that ultimately led to its demise.
Firstly the role and influence of the League itself will be looked at. Next, The direct
impact of the Great Depression upon international peace and the power of the League
is examined. Lastly, the major reasons for the failure

the League to settle such disputes. The League continued to be indecisive and never
was able to act firmly enough. This meant that countries were sacrificed in place of
peace. However this only postponed the inevitable, an in late 1939, the second world
war had begun.
Soon after the end of WWII, the league of Nations was disbanded and replaced with a
new peace organization, the United Nations. It has stood until today.
