Grant took control of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River. Union General William T. Sherman marched through the South, annihilating everything in their path. On April 9, 1865, General Lee surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia. 610,000 Americans were killed during the Civil War. They died for a cause. They died to save the Union.
