The Great Gatsby
Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by
year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter, tomorrow
we will run faster, stretch our arms farther..and one fine morning.
Jay Gatsby clearly embodies the American dream as well as America itself.
Through being a self-made man, and developing from rags to riches, Gatsby
symbolizes the American dream. Through his high yet false hopes and

called America, it seemed to them an island of fantasy, where freedom and
opportunity lay everywhere. They were simply in awe, and in wonder of this
"green breast" of a new world. Beneath Gatsby's consumption and corruption
and freedom, he was in wonder of one thing only. That one thing
unfortunately was not a green breast, but a green light, and that is
ultimately the tragedy of Jay Gatsby.
