From a feminist point of view, Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants"
uses a plethora of symbols to convey the idea that a young girl named Jig is a typical woman dealing with a woman's choice. Although the word abortion is never used in the story, the reader is lead to that conclusion through the use of symbolism.

…showed last 75 words of 817 total…what Jig is going to do or what train she is going to take. All we know is her boyfriend takes her bags to 'the other side.' This could mean that he is moving her away from the side where she can see the river and away from the life that grows inside. However, moving their bags could also mean moving their lives to the other side in order to embrace their white elephant.
