schools out of town, at least until the actual high school on Mission Street was completed in 1925.
One of the most popular elementary schools was Woodrow Wilson, built in 1917. It was a large three story, rectangular building that faced Santa Barbara Avenue. The first floor was partly below the street and yard level so it must have seemed more like a basement. Both front and rear entrances to the school entered on the second floor.
