The original purpose of the constitutional convention was to revise the articles of Confederation. What the founding fathers did was to draw up a new constitution, where the power resided in a strong central government. The founding fathers saw that this government was not going to last, so they called for a meeting its sole purpose was to revise the articles of confederation not to abolish them.
