Comparing two film versions of Romeo and Juliet
For my media coursework I am going to compare the first 8-9 minutes of two versions of 'Romeo and Juliet'. The first is by Franco Zeffirelli filmed in 1968 and the second is by Baz Luhrmann filmed in 1996. They both use Shakespeare's language but they are very differently presented. The Zeffirelli version made in 1968 is set in a traditional setting because it is in Verona in Italy in the 1400's as Shakespeare set it. The Luhrmann …showed first 75 words of 582 total…

…showed last 75 words of 582 total…the Ugly. Luhrmann's style attracts many young people, while the Zeffirelli attracts older people. Zeffirelli tries to bring out the love, romance, fate and destiny aspects of Shakespeare's play. However the Luhrmann brings out conflict, fighting of the two tribes. I feel that Shakespeare's language jars to a certain extent with the modern setting I feel they don't altogether work together. For this reason I prefer the Zeffirelli film because it matches with Shakespeare's language.
