Shenandoah Valley in September and October raised Northern hope. The year ended with Union victories at Franklin and Nashville, Tennessee, in November and December. Then the war almost ends in 1865 on April 9 when Robert E. Lee surrenders his Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at the village of Appomattox Court house in Virginia. The war actually ends in May when the remaining Confederate forces surrender. Over 620,000 Americans died in the war. But it finally ended.
