Civil War
prompted the Civil War. The South, wanting to secede from the Union, fought for their rights. It
started on April 12, 1861 when southern artillery shelled Fort Sunter in the harbor of Charleston,
South Carolina.
This war was an enormous turning point in history. It destroyed slavery in the United States
and ended the Southern way of life that depended on slave labor to keep up their farms. It also

of Appattamox Court House in Virginia. Grant offered generous terms and Lee accepted
them with deep appreciation. The news of Appattamox spread all over and left southern armies
surrendering. The war ended on April 9, 1865.
The Civil War has marked a great turn in history. It is known for the secession of the south
along with the question of slavery. It cost about 116,000 lives. The Civil War will always be
remembered as the largest in history.
