Differing economic interests created sectional conflicts over four issues: public land policy, a protective tariff, internal improvements, and the spread of slavery. When Missouri petitioned to be admitted to the Union as a slave state, a major political crisis developed. In a compromise, Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine as a free state.
