snow. Many Indians died from disease and inadequate food. During the period of confinement about 4,000 Cherokees died. Then more Cherokees died after arrival in the Indian Territory because of epidemics and shortage of food. This is why it is called the Trail of Tears.
Today Cherokee people live and work in a modern world just like us. They still remember their old way of life. Cherokee people continue practicing their own language, art and religion.
