gives us the thoughts of the careless soldiers, corrupt officials, ambitious and greedy companies, and the ineffectiveness of some people in society. The societies which Heller depicts are more important than the charchters themselves. Heller even divides the chapters by characters so that each character adds to the portrait of the social system that Heller is painting. The wrongs that Heller discusses result from the inability to control and maintain moral responsibilities in the characters.
