During the period before the Civil War, there were many white slave owners. What many
people don't know, is that there were also freed "people of color" who owned slaves. This may
seem a little ironic or contradictory, and in many cases it was, but much of the time it was an act
of humanitarianism.
There were no where near as many black slave owners as there were white. In 1830 only

black freed man owning another black person who was not part
of their family and using them for their own economic gain is wrong. Slavery altogether is
wrong, and as shown in this document was just as complex for blacks is it was for whites. A black
human being owning another black human being just shows that it does not matter what race or
ethnic background you came from, selfishness and greed are powerful forces
