have the impression of immortality. Dickinson shows in the beginning that the main character feels like she will never die and has begun her journey in her youth. By the end, though, immortality is gone and eternity takes it place. Unlike immortality, eternity does not imply living forever; it just implies forever. The speaker realizes life's mortality. Dickinson shows how powerless we are to resist death and our inability to stop death when it beckons.
