The war of Independence was fought on the principles that personal Freedom, Liberty and Justice were unalienable rights and that all men were created equal. The United States tried to selectively determine who qualified to be equal. This led to the moral decline of the nation and ultimately led to the death of thousands on the battlefield. The American Revolution started in 1776 but was not completed until the end of the civil war.
