Lincoln was elected president in November in 1860, and took office March 4, 1861. South Carolina had threatened to secede, if Lincoln won the presidency. Four days after the election, legislature met at Charleston and South Carolina unanimously voted to secede. Six weeks later, six other states followed: Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Four more stated wanted join later. General George Meade replaced Hooker. In June 1863 Lincoln, finally found a satisfactory leader who could win wars, named Ulysses S. Grant. Grant captured Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in February 1862. Lincoln named Grant commander of all western forces. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.
