Nicholas headed to the front to take on the war and thought everything was fine back home, however things were desperate. People were starving to death because the railroad system was poor and this caused prices to soar on food goods. When Nicholas tried to return to Petrograd his train was stopped and he was forced to abdicate his throne and a provisional government was set up.
