Harriet Ward Beecher was born on June 24, 1813 in Litchfield, Connecticut and he was the eighth child of the thirteen children in his family. His father, Lyman Beecher was a prominent Congregationalist minister and educator, and his sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe, who was a prominent figure during Lincoln's presidency and is the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin.

to have sexual relationships with Tilton's wife. After their second church courts, Beecher was freed of all charges. This event had haunted him for the rest of his life, but he continued to be a popular writer and lecturer. His published works include The Life of Jesus, the Christ (1871) and Evolution and Religion (1885). He died of a cerebral hemorrhage on March 8th 1887 at the age of seventy four and is buried in Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery.
