Most of them do not have the courage to put an end to unhappy relationships, so they go on being miserable. Mrs. Mallard had a not so pleasant way of obtaining her freedom, but she did it nonetheless. It was of that joy, the joy of freedom, or the loss of that freedom that killed Mrs. Mallard.
