In the U.S. today the estimated amount of people suffering from mental retardation ranges from six to eight million people. A very controversial issue dealing with this segment of society is whether or not they should have to face the death penalty. For all of these reasons capital punishment of the mentally retarded should be stopped, and an alternate punishment should be enforced, such as time in a mental institute. Everyone, including the people on death row would be better off and American would finally have the weight of this injustice to society off of their shoulders.
